Dear Reader,
there is a video on YouTube that I hope they will never put down.
Before watching it, you need to understand who Adrian Belew is.
A good place to start is, as usual, its Wikipedia page, that you can read here. If you are short in time just consider the following:

Belew is a member of the intermittently-active pop band the Bears, and fronted his own band GaGa in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He has worked extensively as a session and touring musician, including periods with Frank ZappaDavid BowieTalking HeadsKing CrimsonLaurie Anderson, and Nine Inch Nails, as well as contributing to hit singles by Paul SimonTom Tom Club, and others. Belew himself scored a Top 10 hit single in 1989 with “Oh Daddy,” and his 2005 single “Beat Box Guitar” was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rock Instrumental Performance category.

Belew is one of the most inspiring musicians I have ever had the pleasure to watch perform. Genius, eclecticism, mastery of the instrument, never dull, confusing and revealing at the same time, with unworldly guitar sounds and a great voice. What strikes me most is its attitude, that is perfectly encapsulated in this clip:

I go back to this video when I feel saddened by what happens around me. I chew at it slowly until I get to the part dearest to me. Beware, it has not much to do with music per se. It happens when I think about humanity being on the downward trend in its infinite series of ups and downs. When Science is ridiculed, vaccines treatment as a threat, competence as mask hiding subterfuges and financial interests. That’s when the indomitable spirit of Adrian shines through the darkness:

Too much of today’s music is fashionable crap dressed as artistry. It’s mostly about the way you look, or how you dance. I grew up in the Golden Age of Ideas, but… things go in cycles. Maybe creativity will become fashionable again. Virtuosity is sexy. Regardless, I’m still in King Crimson, still in The Bears, making new solo records. I have a studio and piles of experience……but I feel like I’m just getting started. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I want to keep that attitude for my entire life! In other words: the past may have been satisfying, but that’s no reason to stop. The present situation does not matter until I keep true to my values. The future… well, that is always the best part! I want to put “I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT” in my room and in my office!

Until next time, how will I keep my intent? As Adrian says, that’s how it will happen: some lucky breaks and a lot of hard work.

P.s.: the video was released in 2007. Since then, Adrian’s career has progressed further, and I hope it will never stop!
