Dear Reader,

I like to find insights into the little events of life because the reasoning behind our actions is often a tell-tale of our mental schemes and biases.

I was cooking myself an avocado and the recipe (something very similar to this one) required for two eggs. The problem is, I just had one.

I was able to notice that my automatic response resulted in my inner unconscious voice telling myself: “I know I have a lot of avocado recipes in my Evernote and I should try to learn at least a new one, but today I’ll use half avocado in my salad. I’ll learn a new recipe someday.“.

For a couple of seconds, it made perfect sense. However, my inner conscious voice came back and asked: “What if that someday was just today?”

For many of us “someday” is just a day that will never come. That’s why a lot of productivity and self-help books and gurus are advising us to be specific about our plans: “someday” will never come, but “by next Thursday” puts you in a whole different perspective.

So, I learned two things tonight.

First, I need to avoid “someday” in my inner dialogue.

Second, avocado and mozzarella fit together very well.

Until next time, enjoy your meal.
